23 C
A combination of raw, exposed textures and manufactured materials make up the backbone of the 23 C project in Karachi. The elevation incorporates the use of straight-line geometry in the form of louvered paneling and vertically displaced materials, while adding warmth to the color palette. Each texture plays its part in bringing the exterior together.

41 C
The design for this Karachi based commercial project revolves around adding warmth to the city’s concrete jungle. The building facade is clad in rich colored brick with steel shutters placed at intervals to hold the skin together. The verticality of the structure is balanced with horizontal concrete elements, visually marking out each floor. The final touch includes green terraces and planters, bringing a breath of fresh air to the user, outside and inside.

BEVERLY HILLS RESIDENCES
Set against the backdrop and rolling hills of Murree, the Beverly Hills Residences frame the rich context they belong to. The facade showcases both solids and voids, horizontality and verticality, darker tones and neutral tones. The multiplicities of contrast lends both character and personality to the exterior, capturing the eye of the passerby. All while taller masses shift and turn to capture the surrounding views for the user within. Whether you are a visitor or an inhabitant, there is always something to see.

DG HUT
Nestled next to the Kunhar River, the project pays homage to the rugged and untouched terrain of Kaghan Valley. The contemporary design of the structure attempts at creating more transparency and inclusivity within the rich context. The interplay of solids and voids through broken slanted roofs and wide spanning fenestration offers stolen glimpses of thick dense forests and the rolling Himalayas. While the design applies a modern touch to its profile, it comes back to the context through its use of materiality; raw, exposed and natural. It attempts to immerse itself with its surrounding landscape, while being respectful to the beauty of North Pakistan.

DHA ROUND ABOUTS
In collaboration with FWO, each roundabout in DHA-5 Lahore incorporates tangible and intangible elements of Pakistani culture that offer relatability to the traveler, regardless of their social backgrounds. The principles of Quaid, the architectural remnants of Lahore’s gateways, and Jasmine, the national flower, were some of the concepts applied to this urban-scale venture. Materiality within each roundabout varied between modern renditions of concrete to traditional materials of brick, offering another layer of dimension to the project’s intent.

FWO MSA
Located between the cities of Lahore and Sialkot along with Swat, this motorway service area is a welcome pitstop for the weary traveller. The overall design follows the principles of comfort, safety, and flexibility. Green pockets, louvred sheds, and sitting areas provide a welcome break and pleasant views following a tiresome journey. While defined and alternating pathways encourage pedestrian movement through each service zone so that passengers can walk and stretch their legs before continuing their long drive ahead.

JHK PHARMACEUTICALS
Corporate facades are the face of an organization and the Jalal Hakim Khan Pharmaceuticals building in Nowshera required a design that showcased its values. Modest, simple, and clean layers of neutral undertones, grooved paneling, and metallic finishes come together to strike a professional balance. Additionally, the use of clay planters, pavement, and wooden benches provide a warm touch to the building’s cool exterior, welcoming users both old and new.

KARAKORAM HIGHWAY REST AREA
The design of the motorway service area in Passu takes advantage of the roaring peaks in its vicinity. Each outdoor zone provides views of the context, while indoor zones capture it through curated window placements. The use of natural materials like brick, wood, and vegetation complement the surrounding landscape so that the focus always remains on Passu’s rich context. Shifting materiality within the flooring also signals changes in the programs of the service zones to encourage pedestrian movement, while overhangs provide cover during harsher weather.

MARCOPOLO RESORTS
The Marcopolo Resorts in Passu integrate seamlessly at a collective and holistic level, never grasping the attention away from the rich context in which they reside. The roofing, a clean and contemporary twist on traditional pitched roofs, is a welcome addition to the rugged terrain in the periphery. Upon entering, a long, landscaped driveway leads the user to the low steps and winding ramp of the larger, central hut, inviting them inwards. Each subsequent building incorporates floor-length glass which allows for transparency through and beyond, serving as a meeting point for the outdoors and indoors.

SHEIKHUPURA SCHOOL
The school at Sheikhupura is an ode to architectural spaces that promote learning and encourage curiosity. The curated punctures within the building’s facade not only assist in breathable environments for the students but form pockets of discovery for them as they walk to class. The massing of the facades pulls and pushes, while the focal point remains at the core of the building’s courtyard, which remains the ultimate meeting point for the students during their free periods.
